Play Dough – I have avoided it for 2 reasons. First, my 2 year old loves to put everything in his mouth…. Everything. The more I tell him not to the more it eggs him on that he NEEDS to try the forbidden substance. Second, I don’t want the colored playdough on my furniture/ carpet/ walls ect. So when I found a recipe for edible colorless playdough I thought it was worth and try and I was right! Here is the recipe I followed:
- 1 tub of Whipped Topping
- ½ box of cornstarch
- 2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil
- Note: I did these ingredients but cut the quantities in half
At first Landon loved to simply roll the dough around in his hands, so I let him do that for a while. Then I started introducing items he could play with. Easy things like spaghetti, googley eyes, straws ect. He liked the eyes the best because the little playdough balls started to look like faces, then he named them (mama, dada, baby… you get the idea).
I didn’t encourage him to eat it necessarily (I don’t think this is too appetizing) however if he got curious and put some in his mouth, which he did, I was not worried and calling poison control. He also threw some on the floor – my dog got a taste as well!
How could we talk about this? Well I created shaped and asked Landon what shape I was creating (he only really knows a few basic ones). Or I would put little balls of play dough in front of him and ask him to count the balls. I also encouraged him to tell me the colors of the googley eyes and straws.
At the end of the play session I simply could use a diaper wipe to wipe his hands and either throw away the play Dough or put it in the fridge (it probably has 24 more hours where you could use it than I would toss it).
Super easy! Do you have older children? Perhaps you could make small animals with the play dough, or do different colors and create real faces. You could also up the learning curve, I used basic shapes but you could do 3 dimensional (sphere, cylinder) or have them ADD the different piles together, or subtract, multiply, you get the idea.
Lots going on in the DMV this weekend, I found a few that I wanted to pick from – what activity will peak your interest.
